Getting control of stress and insomnia naturally…

Chronically living with high levels of stress is something many of us take for granted as a normal part of living in the modern world. Unfortunately it is something we have become accustomed to in our society, but not something our bodies are well adapted to.

If the body is under chronic stress the body thinks it is under threat and produces peptides and proteins called CRH. This system is involved in the flight or fight response to acute stress resulting in the constriction of blood flow to all parts of the body except to the heart, lungs and brain (the organs that respond most to danger).

This system of flight or fight served our ancestors well on the plains of Africa, but is clearly unhelpful in our modern society in most situations.

Freedom Physio utilises Chinese Acupuncture techniques to help aid in stress reduction and in insomnia treatments.

A 2004 systematic review of 46 Acupuncture trials found Acupuncture was beneficial for insomnia.

The question however that you may be thinking is: “How do those tiny needles help me sleep better?”

In the studies, Acupuncture was found to stimulate the body in a way that helped reduce the creation of peptides such as CRH. With a reduction of these cellular peptides, a reduction of stress hormone called Cortisol was achieved. It is this hormone that leads to the flight or fight response. Cortisol levels in the body are now at the forefront of medical research into stress. Cortisol levels in rats offering an explanation as to why acupuncture is so useful in the treatment of stress.
